The Zydeco Twist Black Gum, or Tupelo, tree is a unique selection that will immediately add a point of interest to your yard. Its zigzag branches are similar to that of a corkscrew willow and give the tree an appearance that simply draws the eye. In winter the zigzag branches really pop making this tree great specimen planting for a medium sized area. The black gum is an excellent fall tree and often holds out a little later for its show, but when transitions you can't mistake it. Leaves change from green/orange quickly to red with mottled darker red splotches that make it deeper in color, but simultaneously more brilliant than many of the maple cultivars.

When caring for these trees we recommend maintaining the usual mulch ring to protect the tree from elements, competing plants, and yard equipment for the first few years. The roots of a black gum tree should not be kept wet, but the tree appreciates a deeper more prolonged watering regiment than other shade trees and it can tolerate soil that gets well soaked, but doesn't stay wet. Slow release fertilizer can be applied (per directions on the bag) in the early fall to give the tree a boost that will carry through to spring. See our care tab below for more details.

Zydeco Twist

Tree arrived in fall, so we'll see how it wakes up next spring. It looks appropriately packaged, but the nursery had pruned the central leader due to frost concerns from the previous year. Of course, no mention of this way made until I sent an email asking why the central leader had been pruned.

The bare root tree arrived as was scheduled. Packaged carefully with moist mulch around the roots of the plant. The package was intact with no damage. We planted the tree the next day and note the plant was in a dormant state with live buds. Thank you for planting instructions. We are beginning to experience lower 30's nighttime temperatures. There is a mature zydeco twist 3 blocks from our house and it's fall colors are beautiful. We so look forward to years of shade and beauty from our own tree.
