Calycanthus 'Aphrodite' delivers oversized, magnolia-like flowers in deep burgundy-red that reach three to six inches across — a stunning display from a genus not typically known for showiness. This deciduous shrub blooms on new wood beginning in early summer and continues flowering intermittently through summer, producing its rich blooms against a backdrop of glossy, dark green foliage that transitions to golden yellow in autumn. The fragrance alone earns this cultivar a spot in the garden, with blooms releasing a fruity medley often described as a blend of pineapple, strawberry, and banana, though individual perception of the scent varies with flower age, time of day, and temperature. 'Aphrodite' reaches six to twelve feet tall with a similar spread and maintains a well-structured, upright habit with significantly less suckering than straight species selections of eastern sweetshrub.

Plant 'Aphrodite' in full sun to part shade in consistently moist, well-drained soil for the heaviest bloom set and strongest fragrance. Hardy in zones 5 through 9, this vigorous grower adapts to a range of garden settings — use it as a specimen near a patio or entryway where the fragrance can be fully appreciated, tuck it into a mixed shrub border, or mass it for an informal flowering hedge along a woodland edge. The flowers make exceptional cut stems for arrangements, and the plant's deer resistance and general freedom from serious pest and disease issues keep maintenance straightforward. Because it blooms on the current season's growth, pruning in late winter or early spring keeps it shapely without sacrificing flower production. Plan for its eventual size, as 'Aphrodite' exhibits notable hybrid vigor and can push toward small tree proportions if left unpruned.
