Bloomerang® Dark Purple Reblooming Lilac (Syringa x 'SMSJBP7', USPP 26,549) extends the traditional lilac season from a few weeks in spring to several months of fragrant blooms. Large dark purple buds emerge in mid to late spring, opening to classic deep purple-lilac flowers that perfume the air for weeks. After a brief rest period to produce new growth, the plant blooms again from mid to late summer and continues through frost. This reblooming characteristic sets it apart from traditional lilacs that flower only once per year. Hardy in zones 3-7, this deciduous shrub grows 4-6 feet tall and wide with a naturally rounded habit. The small-leaved form provides better disease resistance than older lilac varieties, avoiding the powdery mildew and bacterial issues that can disfigure common lilacs.

Plant Bloomerang Dark Purple in foundation plantings where its compact size works well, in mixed borders as a focal point, or in decorative containers on patios and decks. The fragrance makes it suitable near seating areas, walkways, and entryways. This cultivar requires full sun (at least six hours daily) and well-drained soil—wet, soggy conditions will cause problems. Keep the plant well-watered and mulched during late spring and early summer to encourage vigorous growth that supports the summer rebloom. Pruning is optional but can be done immediately after spring bloom to remove developing seedheads and encourage additional new growth. Never prune in fall, winter, or early spring as this removes flower buds.

Like most lilacs, Bloomerang Dark Purple requires a period of cold weather to bloom well, making it unsuitable for warm climates but very cold-hardy in northern gardens. It tolerates summer heat and humidity better than many lilacs and resists deer browsing. Fertilizing in early spring and again after spring bloom can support vigorous growth. The plant belongs to the Proven Winners ColorChoice collection and represents a breeding advancement in reblooming lilac technology developed at Spring Meadow Nursery and Marketed by Proven Winners.
