A stunning breakthrough in cold-hardy magnolia breeding, 'Blushing Belle' brings the captivating beauty of large pink magnolia blooms to a wider spectrum of agricultural zones. This exceptional hybrid was developed by the late Dennis Ledvina of Green Bay, Wisconsin, a renowned magnolia breeder who dedicated his career to hybridizing magnolias [1].
The result of crossing 'Yellow Bird' with 'Caerhays Belle', this cultivar inherits the superior cold hardiness of its 'Yellow Bird' parent (reliably hardy to Zone 4) while capturing the luminous pink coloration of 'Caerhays Belle' [1]. Like many magnolia, the flowers are striking, measuring up to 6 inches across with deep blush-pink exteriors that open to reveal softer pink interiors. The tepals are elegantly narrow, creating a fuller, more refined flower form. Blooms emerge in late spring as the foliage begins to unfold, helping to protect flowers from late frost damage.
'Blushing Belle' matures into an upright, narrow tree reaching 20-30 feet tall with a spread of 15-20 feet, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes where space is at a premium. The moderate growth rate and manageable size allow it to serve beautifully as a specimen tree, focal point, or accent in mixed borders. The bright green deciduous foliage provides a clean backdrop through summer before dropping in fall.
For best performance, site 'Blushing Belle' in full sun to partial shade in organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Consistent moisture is important, particularly during establishment. Provide protection from harsh winds, which can damage buds and flowers. This magnolia is deer resistant and requires minimal pruning, though shaping can be done immediately after flowering if desired.
