Helleborus 'Childhood Sweetheart' is a stunning double-flowered hybrid Lenten Rose that belongs to the acclaimed WEDDING PARTY® series developed by renowned hellebore breeder Hans Hansen at Walters Gardens. This exceptional cultivar showcases the breeder's dedication to selecting plants with notable vigor, prolific floral displays, and rich flower colors. As part of the Proven Winners program, 'Childhood Sweetheart' represents a breakthrough in double-flowered hellebore breeding, combining exceptional garden performance with striking ornamental appeal. The cultivar is classified within the Ranunculaceae family and represents advanced breeding work in Helleborus × hybridus selections.
The distinctive floral display of 'Childhood Sweetheart' features fully double blooms with a remarkable color pattern that creates a lacy, romantic appearance. The interior petals are a luminous golden yellow adorned with dramatic burgundy-red veining that spreads across each petal surface, creating an intricate network of color. The edges of these yellow petals are also heavily marked with rich burgundy-red, intensifying the bicolor effect. The backs of the petals present a solid dark burgundy-red, adding visual interest when the nodding flowers are viewed from below or when stems are cut for arrangements. This reversible color pattern provides dimension and depth to the blooms that remains captivating throughout their extended flowering period. The double flower form contains multiple layers of petals, creating substantial, rose-like blossoms that are significantly showier than single-flowered hellebore types.
This cultivar matures to form a tidy, mounded habit reaching eighteen to twenty-four inches in both height and spread. The evergreen foliage consists of deeply divided, palmate leaves with a leathery texture that provides year-round garden interest even when plants are not in flower. The dark green leaves create an attractive backdrop for the showy blooms and maintain their ornamental value through all four seasons, making this an excellent choice for providing winter structure in shaded garden areas. The foliage emerges fresh in spring and remains handsome throughout summer and fall before being renewed the following growing season.
One of the most valuable characteristics of 'Childhood Sweetheart' is its remarkably early bloom time, beginning in late winter and extending through early spring. In warmer regions within its hardiness range, flowering may commence as early as February, while in colder zones blooms typically appear in March. This extended flowering period lasts an impressive six weeks or more, making Lenten roses among the longest-blooming perennials available to gardeners. As true harbingers of spring, these blooms provide critical early-season nectar for emerging pollinators including native bees at a time when few other flowers are available, making them an ecologically valuable addition to sustainable landscapes.
Helleborus 'Childhood Sweetheart' thrives in USDA hardiness zones four through nine, demonstrating exceptional cold hardiness with a minimum temperature tolerance of negative thirty degrees Fahrenheit. This broad adaptability makes the cultivar suitable for gardens across much of the continental United States. The plant performs best in part shade to full shade conditions, preferring locations that receive four to six hours of direct sun or fewer than four hours of sun daily. Protection from hot afternoon sun is particularly important for maintaining flower color and preventing foliage scorch. While the species prefers rich, moist, organic soil with good drainage, 'Childhood Sweetheart' demonstrates remarkable adaptability and will also grow successfully in sandy or clay soil types. The cultivar benefits from soil amendment with well-aged leaf mold and compost prior to planting. Plants prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH, so gardeners with extremely acidic soil should consider incorporating lime during soil preparation.
Once established, this Lenten Rose exhibits good drought tolerance and can withstand short periods of dry conditions, though consistent moisture produces the best growth and flowering. The extensive root system spreads gradually, allowing plants to naturalize beautifully in moist woodland settings where they can colonize as space permits. In the landscape, 'Childhood Sweetheart' excels in shade borders, woodland gardens, and naturalized plantings under deciduous trees where it can take advantage of late winter and early spring sunlight before tree canopies leaf out. The cultivar performs excellently when planted en masse to create dramatic early-season color displays, and it also thrives in container plantings where its evergreen foliage and early blooms can be showcased on shaded patios and entryways.
The low-maintenance nature of this cultivar makes it highly desirable for both residential and commercial landscapes. Care requirements are minimal, consisting primarily of removing the previous year's worn foliage in early spring before new growth emerges and flower buds develop. This simple grooming practice helps showcase the fresh flowers and new foliage while maintaining a tidy appearance. Plants are remarkably pest and disease-free under proper growing conditions, though gardeners should watch for occasional slug or snail damage, which can be controlled with baits or diatomaceous earth barriers. The cultivar demonstrates excellent resistance to deer and rabbit browsing, making it particularly valuable for gardens where these pests are problematic. Plants should be sited in sheltered locations protected from harsh winter winds to prevent foliage damage and ensure optimal performance.
'Childhood Sweetheart' makes an exceptional cut flower, with blooms that can be used in traditional bouquets or floated in shallow bowls of water for striking centerpiece arrangements. For best results when cutting for arrangements, select older blooms that have dropped their stamens and begun to develop small round seed pods, as these flowers will last longest indoors. The double flowers provide superior substance and longevity compared to single forms, making them particularly valuable for floral design.
This Lenten Rose combines beautifully with other early-blooming shade perennials and spring bulbs to create dynamic seasonal displays. Excellent companion plants include early-blooming daffodils, snowdrops, winter aconite, early-blooming primroses, epimediums, ferns, hostas, astilbes, and coral bells. The evergreen foliage provides attractive textural contrast to companion plants throughout the growing season, while the early flowers bridge the gap between winter and spring in the shaded garden. As an important early pollinator plant with exceptional ornamental value, deer resistance, and minimal care requirements, Helleborus 'Childhood Sweetheart' represents an outstanding choice for adding reliable color and ecological value to shade gardens and woodland settings.

Helleborus 'Childhood Sweetheart' - Leten Rose
Hellebores are low-maintenance and disease and pest resistant. This makes them very enjoyable to grow and care for. In the late winter it's best to trim back last year's growth to enhance production. Hellebores prefer moist, well drained soil high in organic matter, but will also grow well in sandy to clay soil. Hellebores can tolerate some draught and a range of soil PH. You should protect hellebores from afternoon sun, as shade loving plants they work well under trees and other places where many perennials don't thrive. WARNING: Hellebores are poisonous. Do not consume any part of the plant!
