Unlike their climbing cousins the bush clematis keeps a lower profile, but what they do share are the prolific and unique blooms. Dark pink buds open into blended pink, bell-shaped flowers that appear to ring in a gentle breeze. After flowering, attractive star shaped threadlike seed heads emerge creating a showy display that accentuates the already interesting colors and textures of the flowers.

For those looking for a maintenance free plant it is best to look elsewhere, but those who work their gardens regularly will be rewarded. Plants benefit from staking and light cages are even better for keeping the broad deep-green foliage upright during the growing season. Clematis should be pruned each year to the previous year's wood, but this can be tricky as their dense structure makes it more challenging. Pruning should be done in winter or early spring, and will eliminate spring flowers - meaning you’ll have to wait for summer to experience the gorgeous blooms. For those who want spring flowers, restorative pruning can be done by pruning back ⅓ of the branches and leaving ⅔ to grow.

Why we choose 'Stand by Me Pink'

We've been growing bush clematis for sale for years and we love the process and the reward. Starting in early spring bundles of reaching shoots emerge from the ground. They will stand on their own for a few weeks, but with adequate sun, moisture and fertile soil they soon require support. We've always got plenty of small bamboo canes around the nursery and we support Stand by Me with the tops we lop off our canes used in shipping. A bundle of three 15" canes make the perfect support structure for this plant. With support, the shoots continue to reach upward pushing together in a neat mass that explodes with flowers and soon after interesting seed heads, which are ornamental in their own right. Bush clematis is a plant that rewards from spring to fall. It requires a little extra TLC, but honestly not much, and for those who work in the garden the zen found in the management of the plant makes the rewards that much sweeter.
