In late spring, when you think the dogwood show has ended, Constellation steps onto the stage with an encore performance that bridges the gap between our native flowering dogwood and its Asian cousin. This Rutgers hybrid produces an absolute profusion of large, pristine white bracts—each "flower" measuring 4 to 5 inches across—that literally weigh down the branches with their abundance. The bracts are well-spaced rather than overlapping, creating an elegant, star-like appearance that gives this cultivar its celestial name. Growing 16 to 22 feet tall and 12 to 18 feet wide, Constellation maintains a low-branching habit that creates an approachable, multi-stemmed appearance even when grown as a small tree. The oval, dark green leaves provide a handsome backdrop through summer before transitioning to rich purplish-red tones in fall.

Constellation earned its place in the landscape through superior reliability and versatility. This is a tree that blooms heavily year after year, without the feast-or-famine flower production that plagues some dogwoods. The mid-spring flowering time—later than Cornus florida but earlier than C. kousa—means it extends the dogwood season in your garden and pairs beautifully with spring bulbs that are just finishing and early perennials like columbines and late iris. The compact size makes Constellation an excellent choice for smaller residential lots, foundation plantings, or as a specimen near patios where its abundant flowers can be appreciated up close. Plant it against a dark backdrop of evergreens or a house wall, and those white bracts practically glow.

As part of the groundbreaking Stellar® Series, this hybrid was born from necessity. Constellation and its Stellar siblings emerged as highly resistant to dogwood borer and significantly more resistant to both anthracnose and powdery mildew than their native parent.

Constellation thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers organically rich, well-drained, acidic soils. Like all dogwoods, it benefits from 2-4 inches of organic mulch to keep roots cool and moist during summer heat. While more drought-tolerant than native flowering dogwoods, young trees appreciate consistent moisture until established. Good air circulation helps maintain the disease resistance this cultivar was bred for.
