Delosperma 'Macarena' PPAF FLASHMOB™ Series

Delosperma 'Macarena' is a vibrant, eye-catching cultivar of ice plant that brings exceptional color to rock gardens, containers, and drought-tolerant landscapes. This South African native succulent is prized for its brilliant bicolor blooms and exceptional heat and drought tolerance. This is low-growing, spreading succulent perennial that produces stunning daisy-like flowers in a distinctive two-tone color pattern. The blooms feature bright yellow centers that gradually transition to coral-pink or peachy-orange outer petals, creating a striking sunset effect. This cultivar was developed for superior performance and flower power compared to older ice plant varieties.

The plant forms dense mats of fleshy, cylindrical succulent foliage that remains evergreen in mild climates. The leaves are small, narrow, and gray-green in color. Plants typically reach 3-4 inches in height and spread 12-18 inches wide, making them excellent groundcovers. The most remarkable feature is the profuse flowering display from late spring through fall, with peak bloom occurring in summer. The flowers open in full sun and close at night or during cloudy weather.

'Macarena' thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established and prefers well-drained to sandy soils. Poor drainage is the primary cause of failure with this plant, particularly in winter. It performs best in USDA hardiness zones 5-9, though hardiness can vary depending on drainage and winter moisture levels. The plant is highly heat-tolerant and actually performs better in hot, dry conditions than in humid environments.

Water newly planted specimens regularly until established, then reduce watering significantly. Mature plants need supplemental water only during extended dry periods. Avoid overwatering, especially in clay soils or during winter months. No fertilization is typically necessary; in fact, rich soils can promote excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Deadheading is not required. In late winter or early spring, you can lightly trim back any winter-damaged foliage to encourage fresh growth.

The plant is deer and rabbit resistant, making it valuable in areas with wildlife pressure. It requires minimal maintenance once established and is considered a "plant it and forget it" option for challenging sites. The succulent foliage provides year-round interest even when not in bloom.
