Tiny Wine® Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'SMPOTW' PP26,749) delivers rich, season-long color in a compact, garden-friendly package. This deciduous shrub reaches just 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, making it the most compact purple-leafed ninebark on the market. Deep burgundy-maroon foliage emerges in spring and holds its intense color throughout the growing season, providing a striking backdrop for clusters of dainty pinkish-white flowers that line each stem in late spring to early summer. The flower display is exceptional — light pink buds open to small white blooms that practically cover the plant from top to bottom. As autumn arrives, the foliage shifts to a fabulous reddish-pink, and once leaves drop, the exfoliating, multi-layered bark adds unexpected winter interest to the landscape.

Tiny Wine thrives in full sun with at least six hours of direct light for the deepest foliage color, though it tolerates part sun conditions. Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 7, this native North American shrub handles cold, exposed sites with ease and adapts to a wide range of soils, including clay and alkaline conditions. Established plants demonstrate solid drought tolerance as well. One of its standout qualities is excellent resistance to powdery mildew, a trait that sets it apart from many other dark-leafed ninebarks. Its compact, bushy habit makes it ideal for small garden spaces, foundation plantings, mixed shrub borders, low hedges, mass plantings, and even container gardens. Pair it with gold or chartreuse-leafed shrubs like Tiny Wine® Gold ninebark or contrasting foliage plants for a spectacular color combination. Pruning is rarely necessary — if shaping is desired, do so just after flowering since blooms form on old wood.
