This cultivar has been grown for over 50 years and is one of the most popular. It has the classic purple color that gardeners love with a shorter profile that makes it perfect for edging in gardens and pathways. Silver foliage shoots forth a multitude of stems and produces a profusion of fragrant bright purple colored flower spikes for many weeks. The stems are just the right length for cutting for fresh or dried bouquets. As with other Lavenders, 'Hidcote' makes a great addition to a cut flower bouquet and the plant itself has many fine qualities as an aromatic herb.

Lavender is a classic plant with many medicinal and culinary uses and it has a unique ability to grow in poor dry soil where many other plants fail. It is very resistant to pests and disease, but poor drainage will lead to crown rot, so site selection in an area with good winter drainage is essential. Cutting back plants in the early winter will help soil dry out and reduce the risk of rot. Plants should be grown in poor soil so avoid soil improvements or fertilizers. Do you have a place where nothing else grows? Lavender will!
