Fashion Azalea

Among the hundreds of Glenn Dale hybrid azaleas introduced to American gardens, 'Fashion' has held its place in the trade for decades on the strength of a flower that genuinely stands out in the landscape. The blooms are salmon-pink, approximately 2 inches across, and produced in the distinctive hose-in-hose form — where one set of petals nestles inside another, creating a layered, double-like flower effect that catches light differently than a standard single. The color sits in a warm middle ground between pink and coral, providing a tone that reads vividly against dark evergreen foliage and complements both cool-toned and warm-toned companion plantings. Flowering arrives in late season relative to other azaleas, extending the bloom calendar past earlier-flowering types and giving gardeners an opportunity to sequence color through the spring display.

'Fashion' grows as a tall, spreading evergreen shrub reaching 4–5 feet high and 5–6 feet wide at maturity in Zones 6–10, with flower buds rated hardy to 0°F — a cold tolerance notably superior to the more tender southern Indica types it visually rivals in bloom size and color intensity. It performs best in partial to full shade with dappled light filtering through a high deciduous canopy, and like all azaleas demands consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil in the pH range of 4.5–6.0, amended with organic matter such as peat or pine bark. The spreading habit and attractive year-round foliage make it well suited to mass plantings, woodland borders, and foundation settings, and the flowers cut reasonably well for arrangements. Pruning, when needed, should be done immediately after flowering to avoid sacrificing the following season's bud set.
