Gold Flame Spirea Spiraea japonica 'Goldflame' (syn. S. × bumalda 'Goldflame')

Gold Flame Spirea delivers a remarkable three-season foliage show that few deciduous shrubs can match. New spring growth emerges in vivid shades of bronze-red and orange, creating an eye-catching display before gradually maturing to soft yellow-green through the summer months. Flat-topped corymbs of rose-pink flowers appear in late spring to early summer, reaching four to six inches across and standing in attractive contrast against the golden foliage. The show continues into autumn when leaves transition to rich tones of copper, orange, and scarlet before dropping. This dense, mound-forming shrub reaches three to four feet tall with an equal or slightly greater spread, maintaining a tidy, rounded habit throughout the growing season.

Gold Flame performs well across a broad range of conditions, thriving in USDA Zones 4 through 8 in full sun to partial shade. Full sun produces the most vibrant foliage color, though light afternoon shade benefits plants in hotter climates. Average to moist, well-drained soil suits it best, and it adapts readily to a wide variety of soil types and pH levels. This cultivar demonstrates good heat tolerance and handles urban conditions with ease, making it a reliable performer in both residential and commercial landscapes. Flowers appear on new wood, so hard pruning in late winter encourages vigorous fresh growth and a strong flush of bloom. Deadheading spent flower clusters promotes sporadic rebloom into late summer. Gold Flame works beautifully as a low hedge, border accent, or foundation planting, and pairs especially well with blue-toned or deep green companions like hostas, ornamental grasses, or conifers that highlight its warm foliage tones. Butterflies and other pollinators frequent the blooms throughout the flowering period.
