Prairie Winds® 'Desert Plains' fountain grass is truly an outstanding specimen that brings movement and grace to sunny gardens. This large fountain grass forms a stunning upright vase-shaped clump of finely textured, narrow green foliage that dances with every breeze, creating dynamic interest from spring through winter. Beginning in midsummer, the leaf tips begin their dramatic color transformation, blushing deep red before the entire clump transitions into a breathtaking display of orange and gold by autumn. Showy 5-inch bottlebrush plumes emerge in smoky purple tones and gracefully age to warm tan, held proudly above the foliage like nature's own feather dusters or pipe cleaners. Deer-resistant and easy to grow, this low-maintenance performer only requires full sun and well-drained soil making it perfect for modern landscapes, borders, and anywhere you need a plant without complicated care requirements.

Reaching an impressive 3-4 feet in both height and spread, 'Desert Plains' commands attention whether used as a dramatic focal point or tucked into containers for patio gardens. The plumes make exceptional cut flowers and dried arrangements, holding their beauty long after harvest, while the seed heads provide winter interest when left standing—creating magical silhouettes dusted with frost and snow. This warm-season grass thrives in average to fertile soils and handles both consistently moist conditions and drier situations once established, though it prefers not to be overwatered. Perfect for eclectic and modern garden styles, borders, mass plantings, or as an architectural specimen, 'Desert Plains' brings texture, movement, and multi-season color to any sunny spot.

'Desert Plains' is a proud member of the Prairie Winds® collection and represents a significant advancement in Pennisetum breeding, discovered as a seedling of 'Cassian' by Gary Trucks of Amber Wave Gardens in West Michigan. This selection showcases improved habit, superior flowering performance, and more spectacular fall color than its parent 'Cassian' or the classic 'Hameln', setting a new standard for hardy fountain grasses. Many horticulturists consider it the best hardy Pennisetum available today—a reputation bolstered by its recognition as a Chicago Botanic Garden Plant Evaluation Top Performer in 2018. The Prairie Winds® collection brings together ornamental grasses specifically selected for their ability to add graceful texture and movement while thriving in full sun conditions with proven deer resistance. 'Desert Plains' delivers exceptional ornamental value to the trade with its extended season of interest, reliable hardiness in zones 5-9, and pest-free nature that makes it a dream for both landscapers and home gardeners seeking architectural drama without the maintenance headaches.
