'Harvest Moon' is an exciting addition to our virginiana witch hazel collection because it has some of the fullest witch hazel blooms that we've seen. Witch hazel often have a subtle display, but 'Harvest moon' is striking in the garden flowering providing a much fuller display of blooms than other witch hazel. It also has an tight pyramidal shape making it much more suited for border plantings and for use as a small accent tree than other varieties.
The virginiana variety blooms in the fall. So take advantage of this late season display of bright yellow flowers by providing it with backdrop of dark green or purple fall foliage. For us 'Harvest Moon' heralds the coming holiday season, providing unexpected beauty for our holiday guests as the landscape settles into early winter.
Witch hazel is a very hardy plant and has few problems with disease. Although native, it is an under-appreciated plant in the United States, but most homes in Europe, particularly Germany, have at least one witch hazel in the garden. It grows best in well-drained soil rich in organic matter, but can tolerate some clay.
