Throughout spring and summer, narrow, dark emerald-green leaves are densely arranged along upright stems, creating fine texture and an attractive shrubby appearance in the border. This interesting willow like foliage provides excellent contrast to broader-leaved perennials long before the bloom period begins.
When autumn arrives, 'Autumn Gold' becomes absolutely covered in a dense carpet of bright golden-yellow flowers, each bloom reaching approximately two inches in diameter with characteristic dark brown center cones. The profuse flowering creates a stunning sea of color that persists until a hard frost, making this cultivar an invaluable asset for extending the garden season.
Beyond its ornamental value, 'Autumn Gold' offers tremendous ecological benefits. As a late-season bloomer, it provides crucial nectar and pollen resources for bees and butterflies when many other flowers have finished. The seeds are also beloved by birds, making this plant an excellent choice for pollinator gardens and naturalized plantings. The species serves as a host plant for various caterpillar species as well.
This native cultivar thrives in full sun and performs best in average, well-drained soil, though it demonstrates remarkable adaptability to a wide range of soil conditions from sandy to clay. Once established, 'Autumn Gold' is notably drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture helps maintain the plant's best appearance. In partial shade, expect reduced flowering and a more open habit that may require support.
Unlike its parent species, 'Autumn Gold' does not readily self-seed, maintaining a controlled presence in the garden. Dividing clumps every three to four years in fall will help maintain vigor. The plants benefit from being cut back in spring before new growth emerges. When spacing plants, allow 18 to 24 inches between centers for full coverage.
'Autumn Gold' pairs beautifully with other fall bloomers including asters, ornamental grasses, Joe-Pye weed, coneflowers, and aromatic fall phlox. It serves as an excellent companion to garden mums and creates stunning combinations in cottage gardens, perennial borders, prairie-style plantings, and meadowscapes. Its compact size makes it particularly suitable for smaller gardens where traditional tall sunflowers would be overwhelming, while its bright autumn color and pollinator appeal make it a natural choice for native plant gardens and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Helianthus 'Autumn Gold' Sunflower-Willowleaf
Heliopisis will grow in both full sun and part shade. We recommend full sun for best performance. Heleiopsis does well in average soil and will tend to fall if grown in soil that is too rich. Just keep fertility and moisture average and this plant will be its most successful. You can deadhead spent flowers and you'll get more blooms - this will also help prevent reseeding, unless you are naturalizing an area, in that case let them grow!
