Northern Exposure™ Purple brings rich, eggplant-purple foliage to the shade garden, with a light silvery overlay and gray-green veining that gives the rounded leaves real depth from spring through fall. The mounding habit forms quickly into a full, tidy crown, and because the color holds so well through summer heat, it reads as a much longer season of interest than most purple-leaved coral bells manage. From late spring into fall, wiry stems rise 20 to 25 inches above the foliage carrying airy sprays of small pink bell-shaped flowers that draw hummingbirds and other pollinators, adding a second layer of color without ever hiding the leaves.
This is an easy, adaptable perennial for USDA zones 3 through 9, equally at home in full sun with consistent moisture or in the part-to-full shade where most gardeners plant their coral bells. Give it moderately well-drained, organic soil and average water, and set the crown at soil level rather than burying it, since Heuchera crowns are prone to rot if planted too deep. Northern Exposure™ Purple is notably rust-resistant and shrugs off summer heat and humidity better than many older Heuchera varieties. Use it in mass plantings, as a border or edging plant, in mixed containers, or as a color accent among green-leaved companions like hosta, astilbe, and ferns.

Heucheras are an easy to grow plant that is great for beginner gardeners and anyone looking for a low maintenance perennial. They can be grown in full shade, but the growth rate will be slow, in sun they prefer to be shaded from the hot afternoon sun and will show best color and growth if afternoon shade is provided. They are evergreen in areas with mild winters and if the plant looks damaged or tattered in the early spring simply clip of the damaged leaves. Heucheras are resistant to juglone you they can be drown under walnut trees and they are salt tolerant, making them adaptable to urban conditions.
