The enormous Humpback Whale hosta was once a rare sighting only appearing in a few high-end gardens. In fact, according to Walters Gardens, it was once auctioned off for $725 at a fundraiser. Now is your chance to finally add this voluminous beauty to your garden. ‘Humpback Whale’ is a textured blue/green hosta that grows large mounding heart shaped leaves. It was originally grown by Mildred Seaver who was often referred to as the “Queen of Hostas”. She registered 95 new varieties, including Sea Dream, Sea Monster, and Spilt Milk.

Hostas are a popular perennial due to their flexibility and tolerance of many types of sunlight, but are best known for their success in shade. They are a great plant for supporting the showier members of your garden collective, but can offer many striking features in their own right. Hostas come in thousands of different varieties and many distinct shapes and colors. There is truly a hosta for every occasion or situation. They are hardy plants that can thrive in pristine and urban environments alike. Pair with Coral Bells for an excellent variety of shade tolerant low lying plants for walkways, borders and blending or joining garden elements.

Humpback Whale hosta

Wow, on size of first 2 true leaves. Very healthy. Cannot wait until leaves get their full size. Perfect sized for shipping to keep cost reasonable. Already second tips of leaves showing.

Excited to have a scarce Humpback Whale!

we were pleased to find this hosta at a great price, and were please with the packaging when it arrived safely... the good sized starter plant (with 3 leaves already up and showing off what's to come) was in good condition and promises to grow into a lovely plant.... it's in Pride-of-Place in the garden with space to fill up as it grows! Thank you for picking me a good root ball of this fairly famous hosta and we look forward to checking out your site for more finds over the years to come.
