Puffer Fish® panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'NCHP1', USPP 35,316, Can PBRAF) delivers a spectacular summer display of large, fluffy white panicles so abundant they nearly obscure the foliage beneath them. Blooms open to a pure, clean white and hold that color admirably before gradually transitioning to lime green as they mature — notably avoiding the pink tones common to many other panicle hydrangea selections. As a final flourish, a fresh sprig of white flowers emerges from the tip of each aging panicle, creating a charming two-toned effect that extends seasonal interest well into fall. Strong, upright stems support the voluminous blooms without flopping, and the tight, mounded habit reaches a manageable 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, making this a versatile choice for a wide range of landscape applications.
Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8, Puffer Fish performs across a remarkably broad geographic range, thriving in full sun in cooler climates and benefiting from afternoon shade in warmer regions. As a panicle hydrangea, it blooms on new wood each season, so gardeners can prune confidently in late winter or early spring — simply removing about one-third of the previous year's height to encourage vigorous growth from strong lower buds. The plant adapts well to most soil types except those that are excessively wet or highly alkaline and appreciates regular, moderate moisture for best performance. Its compact stature works beautifully in foundation plantings, mixed borders, mass plantings, and container displays, while the long-lasting blooms double as excellent cut flowers with impressive vase life when stems are split vertically about two inches at the base.
Often described as a larger, more voluminous version of the beloved Bobo® hydrangea, Puffer Fish earns its playful common name from those distinctively plump, rounded flower heads that seem to puff up as they reach full size, bringing a touch of whimsy to a plant with serious landscape credentials.
