Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea Hydrangea arborescens 'SMNHAGOV' USPP 36,788, Can PBRAF

Incrediball Storm Proof™ delivers on its bold name with incredibly stout, thick stems that hold abundant white globe-shaped blooms upright through even the heaviest summer downpours. This Proven Winners® ColorChoice® selection from Spring Meadow Nursery builds on the beloved Incrediball® legacy with a more compact, denser habit reaching 3.5 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at maturity. Puffy white flower heads emerge lime green in bud, open to crisp white, and age gracefully to soft jade green through fall. While individually smaller than the original Incrediball®, the blooms are remarkably abundant and proportionally large on this compact frame, covering the entire plant from top to bottom and eliminating the bare-legged look that plagues many smooth hydrangeas.

Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8, this deciduous shrub thrives in full sun to part sun exposures, producing the biggest blooms and strongest stems with at least six hours of direct sunlight, though warmer climates benefit from some afternoon shade. It performs best in average, moist, well-drained soils and appreciates a layer of shredded bark mulch to conserve moisture. Because it blooms on new wood, gardeners can prune the entire plant back by one-third in early spring just as buds begin to emerge, building a strong woody framework while encouraging vigorous new flowering growth. This reliable bloom habit makes it a superior choice over bigleaf hydrangeas in northern gardens where cold winters frequently destroy old wood flower buds. The mounded habit fits beautifully in foundation plantings, mixed borders, formal or informal hedges, mass plantings, and containers, while the sturdy cut stems hold up exceptionally well in fresh and dried floral arrangements.

Hydrangea arborescens is a North American native species found growing wild across the southeastern United States, from southern Illinois to northern Florida and from New York westward. Gardeners have long known this species by a host of common names including smooth hydrangea, wild hydrangea, hills-of-snow, and wild seven bark. The classic 'Annabelle' cultivar introduced generations of gardeners to the genus, but its notoriously floppy stems left many reaching for plant stakes after every rainstorm. Incrediball Storm Proof™ represents the next evolution in this native lineage, combining the pollinator-friendly, disease-resistant, low-maintenance nature that makes smooth hydrangeas so dependable with the structural integrity gardeners have been waiting for.
