What immediately struck us about Golden Belltower was the consistent columnar/narrow upward structure, each tree growing only around 12 feet wide and 30 ft tall. This modest size and upward shape make Golden Belltower perfect for small groves, plantings near a patio or flower bed, and also the medians of sidewalks or roadways. Our growers and arborists report that this tree is nearly indestructible as it grows, keeping a consistent shape and leaf density even when planted in tough urban microclimates.
Of course, toughness is not it's only quality. An uncommon cultivar, this tree shares leaves of the same size and shape of your witch hazel shrub due to its family lineage. I really enjoy the texture of these leaves throughout the growing season, the shape reminds me a bit of a wafer cookie or potato chip. In the fall, the entire tree changes color to a striking yellow to apricot. Like all trees, color will vary based on seasonal conditions, but from what we’ve heard most years the golden yellow color is consistent and spectacular.
We like this tree for it’s narrow habit and modest size, in fact we are growing two small groves near the entrance to the nursery each spaced 10-12 feet apart. As they grow we expect to have a cluster of symmetrical trees on either side of our drive that have attractive summer leaves and consistently beautiful fall foliage. Since they will be outside the normal irrigation zone of our pond, we also wanted something tough and hardy that will get by on drip-bucket watering, requiring little supplemental water once established.
