'Purple Vase' is a departure from the typical flat-topped or rounded crown of standard eastern redbuds. It Matures at 20-25 feet tall and 10-12 feet wide. The relatively narrow branching angle keeps the crown tight and columnar, making it ideal for tight spaces. Vigorous grower with good garden performance with close ties to summers tower redbud.
Pinkish-lavender pea-like flowers cover bare branches profusely in early spring before leaves emerge. Green heart-shaped foliage provides a classic redbud appearance through summer, turning yellow in fall. The upright vase form is the real selling point—it's narrow enough to fit under power lines and in confined urban spaces where spreading forms wouldn't work. Reportedly heat and drought tolerant once established.
As a straight Cercis canadensis selection, 'Purple Vase' provides the same ecological value as the species. Early spring flowers offer critical nectar for emerging pollinators including the southeastern blueberry bee (Habropoda laboriosa), native bees, and bumble bees. Serves as larval host for 12 species of Lepidoptera, most notably Henry's Elfin butterfly (Callophrys henrici).
How to Use: The narrow upright form makes 'Purple Vase' perfect for:
- Confined spaces and narrow planting beds where width is limited
- Street tree plantings, but only where appropriate soil can be provided.
- Under power lines—the mature height stays below some utility clearance requirements
- Specimen or accent tree where the vertical form creates architectural interest
- Yard tree that won't outgrow small residential lots
- Aligning driveways or walkways where a columnar tree is needed
Full sun to partial shade. Requires well-drained soil and doesn't tolerate wet feet. Relatively low maintenance.
General care for any tree or shrub is easy, but like any living thing will require your attention. Please educate yourself and follow these simple rules.
