This is the peach tree for gardeners who've been told peaches are impossible in their climate. Hardy to USDA zones 4-8, Reliance can survive winter lows that would obliterate most stone fruit, and its late bloom time provides extra insurance against spring frost damage. The tree produces a showy flush of pink flowers in March or April, attracting honeybees and other early pollinators when few other food sources are available. Reaching 12-15 feet tall on standard rootstock. Reliance is self-pollinating—you need only one tree to produce fruit, though planting additional peach varieties nearby can improve fruit set.

The medium-sized freestone peaches ripen in mid-August, approximately five days after the ubiquitous Redhaven. The fruit sports yellow flesh beneath yellow skin marbled with red. While considered best for canning—that mildly acidic quality with good sugar content makes exceptional preserves—the fruit is perfectly pleasant for fresh eating. The harvest will attract attention from songbirds including robins, cedar waxwings, blue jays, and crows, so plan accordingly if you'd like to share (or protect) your bounty.

Reliance requires 1,000 to 1,050 chill hours annually, making it suitable for northern gardens where most peach cultivars dare not tread. Like all peaches, it thrives in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH around 6.5), and benefits from annual pruning to encourage productive new growth. This is a tree for the gardener who's been told "you can't grow peaches here"—Reliance was literally bred to prove them wrong.
