The Somerset Red Maple - Acer rubrum 'Somerset' - will add a beautiful, bright red color to your yard every fall. This cultivar is a cross between the Acer rubrum 'October Glory' and A. rubrum 'Autumn Flame' which will bring a unique beauty to your yard in the fall with a full canopy of red leaves, that last longer than many other maples. It has even shown to have a long lasting fall color as far south as Georgia. The Somerset Red Maple is a very popular shade tree because it grows quickly and has outstanding fall color. It also branches very well as a young tree developing a uniformed, oval form at maturity. Plant this tree in your yard if you want to light up your neighborhood in the fall, reduce your cooling bill in the summer, provide habitat for songbirds or experience great tree climbing.
Red maples are commonly used in a variety of landscapes because they tolerate many different conditions, including dry conditions and even the dreaded 'wet feet/roots'. They also provide ample shade with their upward-rounded growth and full leaf cover. These trees work wonders as natural air-conditioners. They provide large consistent shade in the summer and let the sun warm your home after leaf drop in the fall. The Somerset Red Maple tops out at about 45 ft. tall and 35 ft. wide and will grow quickly putting on 2 or more feet each year. We recommend pruning the tree upwards to give yourself plenty of room underneath the tree and maintain the full and upright shape.

Caring for Red Maple
A red maple tree 'acer rubrum' is a great tree for your yard because it possesses all the great shade tree qualities, but is also very hardy. Red maples are often called swamp maples because they can grow in conditions that are wet and don't require consistently well-drained soil. We still recommend that you mulch your tree each year, get a soil test for fertilizer, and add organic material, but when you have a location that is too wet for other large trees a red maple is an excellent choice. All cultivars of red maple share this characteristic tolerance to wet conditions.
