Anna's Magic Ball® arborvitae delivers year-round golden color in a tidy, self-shaping package. This Proven Winners® ColorChoice® selection forms a naturally dense, globe-shaped dwarf evergreen reaching just 2 to 3 feet tall with a spread of 3 to 4 feet at maturity. Its soft, lacy, scale-like foliage emerges a cheerful bright yellow and holds that vibrant tone through all four seasons — a notable advantage over many gold-toned evergreens that bronze or fade once temperatures drop. The fine-textured sprays create a feathery surface that pairs beautifully with darker greens, blues, and purples for striking contrast in mixed plantings.

Anna's Magic Ball® thrives in full sun to part sun and performs best in deep, moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8, this cultivar handles cold northern winters and tolerates more heat than gardeners often expect from arborvitae. In warmer zones, providing afternoon shade and a 2- to 3-inch layer of shredded bark mulch helps protect the shallow, fibrous root system. Little to no pruning is required to maintain its rounded silhouette, though light shaping can be done in early summer if desired. Its compact stature and well-behaved habit make it an excellent candidate for rock gardens, containers, troughs, low borders, foundation plantings, and perennial bed accents — anywhere a pop of structural evergreen color fits the design.

As a cultivar of the native North American species Thuja occidentalis — a tree historically found in wet forests, swamps, and along lakeshores from the northeastern United States through southeastern Canada — Anna's Magic Ball® offers a decorative garden form while maintaining its connection to a resilient native lineage.
