When nature decides to improve on perfection, you get the Variegated Stellar Pink dogwood. This showstopper emerged as a spontaneous sport on the already beloved Stellar Pink, transforming an exceptional disease-resistant hybrid into something that stops traffic in three seasons. The foliage alone is worth the price of admission—leaves emerge in spring blushing pink before settling into a striking pattern of bright green centers with crisp white margins and marbled gradations between. Think of it as the dogwood that got dressed up for the party and never changed back.

In mid to late spring, large overlapping pink bracts measuring 3 to 5 inches across blanket the tree after the foliage has emerged, creating layers of soft cotton-candy pink against the variegated leaves. The show continues through summer as the white-edged foliage sparkles in dappled shade, then explodes into arguably the most brilliant fall display in the dogwood world—a riot of pinks, maroons, reds, and purples. Even winter brings visual interest with burgundy stems creating architectural structure in the dormant landscape.

The tree maintains the dense, upright habit of its parent, with uniform branching from top to bottom. At a more restrained pace than the standard green-leaved Stellar Pink, it matures to 15-20 feet tall and wide, making it manageable for smaller properties while still commanding attention. The slower growth rate typical of variegated selections is a feature, not a bug—it means this tree won't outgrow its spot or require constant pruning to maintain its elegant proportions.

The Variegated Stellar Pink excels as a specimen tree where its multi-season performance can take center stage. Plant it near patios, entryways, or foundation areas where you can appreciate the foliage detail up close. The variegation makes it particularly valuable for brightening shady corners—those white margins practically glow in dappled light, creating the illusion of perpetual sunshine even under the canopy of larger trees.

This is the tree for gardeners who want the disease resistance of the Stellar series but need something with more visual complexity than solid green foliage. It pairs beautifully with deep green companion plants like hostas, ferns, and boxwood, which frame and accentuate the variegation without competing for attention. In warmer climates, site selection matters—morning sun with afternoon shade will preserve the pink tones in the spring foliage and prevent the white margins from scorching during peak summer heat.

The tree adapts to various soil types but performs best in organically rich, well-draining acidic soil. Like all dogwoods, it appreciates consistent moisture and benefits from a 2-4 inch layer of organic mulch to keep roots cool. It inherits the full disease resistance package from its Stellar Pink parentage, showing excellent resistance to dogwood anthracnose and dogwood borers—the twin scourges that devastated native dogwood populations in the 1970s-90s. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9, it handles both cold winters and hot summers better than pure Cornus florida selections.

The Variegated Stellar Pink, like all members of the Stellar Series, is sterile and produces no fruit. The tree does provide value for pollinators. The mid to late spring blooms provide nectar and pollen when many pollinators are actively foraging. Butterflies also visit the flowers for nectar. If you're seeking a stunning ornamental that won't succumb to disease, provides some pollinator value, and adds unmatched visual interest to the landscape, Variegated Stellar Pink is an excellent choice.
