Slender Silhouette Sweet Gum

Sometimes you need a tree that will fit into a tight space, make a dramatic statement, or looks like living art. In these circumstances, look not further than the fast growing native Slender Silhouette sweet gum. This cultivar was originally spotted and grown for production by Tennessee Nurseryman Don Shadow. Growing 45 ft. tall but only 3 to 5 ft. wide this tree creates a dramatic towering effect and adds an exclamation point in any landscape.

We love these trees on either side of a structure as a symmetrical pairing, or as a breaking point of interest between tall maples or black gums lining a driveway. These trees really are unique, and can be a spectacular tool in the hands of the right landscape designer. Are you bold enough incorporate one into your landscape? During the fall, these trees sport a multitude of beautiful colors. As shades of purple, gold, green, and red/orange spread through the tree in a natural random spectacle. They do develop the typical brown spiky sweet gum fruit, but the super-short branches make cleanup simple. Sweet gums are adaptable to many soil types, but like most trees, they do best in well-drained soil that is high in organic matter.
