Witch Hazel - Hamamelis
Witch hazel is a flowering plant that is native to North America and Asia. It is an under-appreciated plant in the United States, but most homes in Europe, particularly Germany, have at least one witch hazel in the garden. It grows best in well-drained soil rich in organic matter, but can tolerate some clay. Some call this plant 'winter bloom' because it blooms in the late winter and its fragrant blooms, which smell of citrus and spice, mark the last stages of winter and the progression to spring.
